Data Breach places player in a abandoned space station, and their task is to figure out what has happened and how to turn on the necessary equipment. Game combines traditional puzzle and escape room game play while educating players how to seek for information from real information sources. Problems are mainly solved by unlocking different computers and other machines, and the solutions are found using data gathering databases or initializing methods used for information literacy.
Game was developed in cooperation with library and information literacy teachers. All the teaching content of the game was designed by KAMK library personnel. The theme of the game was designed by the game team and library personnel, and the game details and level design were created solely by the game team. The game was created as a part of the project Simppeli, which aims in creation of simple environments for education.
Players can move around the space station using a combination of mouse and keyboard. They can interact with certain objects and computers, which require players to input correct passwords. The answer to the puzzles is mostly found in real information sources, so the players are also required to go outside the game and use real search engines and database tools to find the correct answer.
The virtual environment was created based on science fiction template, and modified according to the needs of the game play. Space station was divided in compartments, and the access to new sections was controlled by the players ability to solve certain puzzles. The game was designed to be run on a medium powered PC, but the option to use the game in VR setting was also kept in mind during the production. The data input and questions in the game were designed through an cloud database, so changing the content would be as easy as possible.
Simppeli Scifi is an experimental demo game, where a lot of the game play elements where tried out and their suitability for education was tested. We are very interested in further developing this teaching environment, so if you have possible development project or suitable funding ideas for the development, don’t hesitate to contact us and discuss possible cooperation.
