Data Breach places players in a space station, where they have to utilizes their information gathering skills to get everything working again.
Game goal
Data Breach places player in an abandoned space station and their task is to figure out what has happened and how to turn on the necessary equipment. The game combines traditional puzzles with escape room-style gameplay while educating players on how to seek for information from real information sources. The problems are primarily solved by first unlocking different computers and other machines and then the solutions are found using data gathering databases or initializing methods used for information literacy.
Teaching content
The game was developed in cooperation with the library and a group of information literacy teachers. KAMK library personnel designed all the teaching content of the game. The game team and library personnel designed the theme of the game, while the game team created the game details and level design. The game was created as a part of the project Simppeli, which aims to create simple environments for education.
Gameplay
Players can move around the space station using a combination of mouse and keyboard. They can interact with certain objects and computers, which require players to input correct passwords. The answers to the puzzles are mostly found in real information sources, so the players are also required to go outside the game and use real search engines and database tools to find the correct answer.
Game creation
The virtual environment used a science fiction template that was modified according to the needs of the gameplay. The space station was divided into compartments and the access to new sections was controlled by the player’s ability to solve certain puzzles. The game was designed in order to run on a mid-power PC, but the option to use the game in a VR setting was also kept in mind during the production. The data input and questions in the game were designed through a cloud database, so that changing the content would be as easy as possible.
Future development
Data Breach is an experimental demo game, where many of the gameplay elements were exploratory and their suitability for education was tested. We are very interested in further developing this teaching environment, so if you have any project or suitable funding ideas, don’t hesitate to contact us and discuss possible cooperation.
