Data Breach places players in an abandoned space station, where everybody has gone mysteriously missing. The players have to utilizes their information gathering skills to get everything up and running.
Data Breach of Simppeli Scifi places player in a abandoned space station, and their task is to figure out what has happened and how to turn on the necessary equipment. Game combines traditional puzzle and escape room game play while education players how to seek for information from real information sources. Problems are mainly solved by unlocking different computers and other machines, and the solutions are found using data gathering databases or initializing methods used for information literacy.
Game was developed in cooperation of KAMK Library and information literacy teachers. All the teaching content of the game and the was designed by KAMK library personnel. The theme of the game was designed in cooperation of the game team and library personnel, and the game details and level design were created solely by the game team. The Game was created as a part of the project Simppeli, which aims in creation of simple teaching environments for education.
Players can move around the space station using a combination of mouse and keyboard. They can interact with certain objects and computers, which require players to input correct passwords. The answer to the puzzles is mostly found in real information sources, so the players are also required to go outside the game and use real search engines and data base tools to find the correct answer.
The virtual environment was created based on science fiction template, and modified according to the needs of the game play. Space station was divided in compartments, and the access to new sections was controlled by the players ability to solve certain puzzles. The game was designed to be run on a medium powered PC, but the option to use the game in VR setting was also kept in mind during the production. The data input and questions in the game were designed through an cloud database, so changing the content would be as easy as possible.
Simppeli Scifi is a experimental demo game, where a lot of the gameplay elements where tried out and their suitability for education was tested. Game is still under development and modifications will still before the end of the Project. Currently the amount of work we can invest is limited. Simppeli Scifi is still under development, and it will be offered for testing late 2016. for designated KAMK teaching personnel for localized Windows versions. By the end of the project Simppeli (December 2017) the game will be free to download on a dedicated location.
